Originariamente il dipinto faceva parte di una pala d'altare raffigurante la Pietà con Storie della Passione, già in Collezione Rabinowitz (cfr. Foto INVN 40991). Nei primi anni del Novecento la pala è stata ridotta in nove frammenti, dispersi in diverse collezioni.
